What it is

Prenatal massage is a way to relax during the second and third trimester. Your therapist works with oil or lotion on the areas that bother you most, with pressure and positioning set up for pregnancy.

Expectant moms often point to the low back, the hips and the calves. The extra weight in front pulls on your low back, tight hip muscles can pinch the sciatic nerve, and your calves, ankles and feet can swell.

Why people book it

  • Can ease low back tension
  • Works the hips where sciatic pain shows up
  • Gives swollen calves and feet some attention
  • An hour to rest that can help you sleep

What a session looks like

Tell your therapist where you hurt before you start. Then you’ll lie side-lying, snuggling a full-body pillow between your knees and up to your chin, and switch sides halfway. Or you’ll lie face down on a special cushion that supports your belly and breasts, with a face rest for your head.

Your neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, legs and feet are uncovered one at a time. Your hips are worked while you’re fully draped. Sixty minutes is a good length. Ninety or longer can be too long in one position.

Prenatal or Swedish?

Pregnant? Book Prenatal. You’ll be side-lying with a full-body pillow or on a pregnancy cushion, not set up like a standard table session. Swedish is the same style of flowing strokes without that positioning. Have concerns about your pregnancy? Check with your doctor or midwife first.
